Akwuke tiene una poblaci\u00f3n estimada de 28.000 personas, desglosadas en 12.500 hombres y ni\u00f1os y 15.500 mujeres y ni\u00f1as. Uno de los principales problemas que afecta a esta comunidad es la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina. Se practica en gran medida en esta comunidad debido a la idea err\u00f3nea de que la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina reduce la promiscuidad de las ni\u00f1as. En Akwuke, las ni\u00f1as son sometidas a la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina ocho d\u00edas despu\u00e9s de su nacimiento. Esto se hace en gran medida para que coincida con la ceremonia de bautizo de la ni\u00f1a.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Sociedad para la Mejora de la Poblaci\u00f3n Rural (SIRP, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) decidi\u00f3 a principios de este a\u00f1o emprender un proyecto para poner fin a la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina, con el apoyo del fondo filantr\u00f3pico de riesgo global Rockflower. Este proyecto se dirigi\u00f3 principalmente a los hombres debido al contexto patriarcal de la comunidad. En Akwuke, las mentalidades patriarcales prevalecen, ya que los hombres y los ni\u00f1os creen err\u00f3neamente que tienen poder sobre los cuerpos de varias mujeres y ni\u00f1as de la comunidad. Como estrategia para cambiar esta mentalidad, la organizaci\u00f3n decidi\u00f3 organizar una serie de grupos de debate y campa\u00f1as de carteles con varios hombres y ni\u00f1os.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En este sentido, el SIRP adopt\u00f3 un enfoque que implicaba un di\u00e1logo abierto y sin prejuicios. Este enfoque se deriv\u00f3 de los seis elementos del abandono de la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina del UNICEF. El SIRP celebr\u00f3 12 rondas de reuniones con los hombres, a trav\u00e9s de las cuales pudieron aumentar el conocimiento y la conciencia de los hombres sobre la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina. Durante estas reuniones, analizaron los diversos efectos negativos de la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina. Algunos de ellos incluyen: sus efectos no solo en la salud de las mujeres y las ni\u00f1as, sino tambi\u00e9n sus efectos en la educaci\u00f3n de las ni\u00f1as y su empoderamiento econ\u00f3mico. Esto se debe en parte a que la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina puede servir como precursora del matrimonio precoz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este proyecto fue un gran \u00e9xito, ya que SIRP experiment\u00f3 un aumento del 35 por ciento en el n\u00famero de hombres y ni\u00f1os defensores de la eliminaci\u00f3n de la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina. La organizaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n fue testigo de una reducci\u00f3n en la tasa de prevalencia de la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina en la comunidad y observ\u00f3 una disminuci\u00f3n del 28 por ciento en la tasa de prevalencia de la mutilaci\u00f3n genital femenina en la comunidad.
