Akwuke tem uma popula\u00e7\u00e3o estimada de 28.000 pessoas, desagregadas em 12.500 homens e meninos e 15.500 mulheres e meninas. Um grande desafio que afeta esta comunidade \u00e9 a MGF\/C. \u00c9 amplamente praticada nesta comunidade por causa do equ\u00edvoco de que a MGF\/C restringe a promiscuidade para meninas. Em Akwuke, a menina \u00e9 submetida \u00e0 MGF\/C oito dias ap\u00f3s seu nascimento. Isso \u00e9 feito em grande parte para coincidir com a cerim\u00f4nia de nomea\u00e7\u00e3o da menina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Society for the Improvement of Rural People (SIRP) decidiu empreender um projeto para acabar com a MGF\/C, com o apoio do fundo global de filantropia de risco, Rockflower, no in\u00edcio deste ano. Este projeto visou principalmente os homens devido ao contexto patriarcal da comunidade. Em Akwuke, as mentalidades patriarcais prevalecem, pois homens e meninos acreditam erroneamente que t\u00eam poder sobre os corpos de v\u00e1rias mulheres e meninas na comunidade. Como uma abordagem para mudar essa mentalidade, a organiza\u00e7\u00e3o decidiu organizar uma s\u00e9rie de grupos de discuss\u00e3o e campanhas de p\u00f4steres com v\u00e1rios homens e meninos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A este respeito, o SIRP adotou uma abordagem que envolveu um di\u00e1logo aberto e sem julgamentos. Esta abordagem foi derivada dos seis elementos do abandono da MGF\/C da UNICEF. O SIRP realizou 12 rodadas de reuni\u00f5es com os homens, atrav\u00e9s das quais eles foram capazes de aumentar o conhecimento e a conscientiza\u00e7\u00e3o dos homens sobre a MGF\/C. Durante essas reuni\u00f5es, eles discutiram os v\u00e1rios impactos negativos da MGF\/C. Alguns deles incluem: seus efeitos n\u00e3o apenas na sa\u00fade das mulheres e meninas, mas tamb\u00e9m seu efeito na educa\u00e7\u00e3o da menina e seu empoderamento econ\u00f4mico. Isto ocorre em parte porque a MGF\/C pode servir como um precursor para o casamento precoce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este projeto foi de fato um grande sucesso, pois o SIRP experimentou um aumento de 35% no n\u00famero de homens e meninos defensores que apoiam o fim da MGF\/C. A organiza\u00e7\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m testemunhou uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o na taxa de preval\u00eancia da MGF\/C na comunidade e observou uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 28% na taxa de preval\u00eancia da MGF\/C na comunidade. Essas estat\u00edsticas foram derivadas de uma s\u00e9rie de entrevistas e pesquisas pr\u00e9\/p\u00f3s conduzidas com a comunidade.
