\"BecomingEn todo el mundo, los j\u00f3venes de bajos ingresos corren el riesgo de abandonar la escuela y de sufrir m\u00faltiples formas de violencia (incluido el homicidio). En Brasil, los j\u00f3venes de bajos ingresos de ascendencia africana constituyen la mayor\u00eda de las 40.000 v\u00edctimas de homicidio cada a\u00f1o. En Estados Unidos y el Caribe, los j\u00f3venes de color est\u00e1n sobrerrepresentados en el abandono escolar y en prisi\u00f3n. En esos entornos, dada la falta de oportunidades y las injusticias hist\u00f3ricas, los j\u00f3venes a veces gravitan hacia versiones de la masculinidad asociadas con la violencia relacionada con las pandillas y la conquista sexual; hasta un tercio de los j\u00f3venes en esos entornos tienen poco o ning\u00fan contacto con sus padres biol\u00f3gicos. Las culturas hipermasculinas que se refuerzan en esos entornos crean vulnerabilidades para las mujeres, las ni\u00f1as, los ni\u00f1os y los hombres.<\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 pol\u00edticas y programas funcionan en esos contextos? \u00bfC\u00f3mo podemos ver a los j\u00f3venes como personas diversas y como aliados en la lucha por la justicia social y de g\u00e9nero, en lugar de considerarlos amenazas? \u00bfQu\u00e9 nos dicen las nuevas investigaciones sobre c\u00f3mo lograr el cambio? \u00bfY c\u00f3mo se relaciona ese trabajo con los esfuerzos para promover el empoderamiento de las adolescentes o c\u00f3mo dialoga con ellos?<\/p>\n

El 8 de mayo, NYU Washington DC llevar\u00e1 a cabo el \u201cForo Weissberg para el Discurso en la Plaza P\u00fablica\u201d para hablar sobre los hombres j\u00f3venes, la paternidad y los caminos hacia la no violencia en Brasil, el Caribe, los Estados Unidos y el mundo. El evento incluir\u00e1 una presentaci\u00f3n especial del pr\u00f3ximo documental de PBS \u2013 To the Contrary \u201cBecoming Papa\u201d, que sigue las historias de dos hombres en las favelas de R\u00edo de Janeiro y c\u00f3mo el coordinador de MenCare, Equimundo, ayud\u00f3 a cambiar la forma en que piensan sobre la paternidad y la hombr\u00eda. Esta proyecci\u00f3n ser\u00e1 seguida por un debate con destacados investigadores y voces en el campo.<\/p>\n

Gary Barker, director internacional de Equimundo y copresidente de la Alianza MenEngage, dar\u00e1 la conferencia principal.
