In Sri Lanka, MenCare Bangladesh learns strategies for engaging fathers

After launching the Priyo Baba (“Dear Father”) campaign last year, MenCare’s partner in Bangladesh, the Center for Men and Masculinities Studies (CMMS), is working to adapt and pilot a new fatherhood program in the country. To learn from others who have already developed and tested programming in South Asia, CMMS staff recently visited MenCare partners in Sri Lanka on an exchange trip. 

MenCare Sri Lanka hosts retreat for fathers and families in December

World Vision Lanka, MenCare Sri Lanka’s coordinator, hosted a MenCare retreat for 18 families on December 4-6, 2015. Fifty-five participants took part in the two-day residential program for families from the Moray Estate in the Ambagamuwa Area Development Program (ADP). Fathers received graduation certificates and celebrated their successful completion of the MenCare program with their families, 

MenCare Sri Lanka partner establishes community forum to sustain fatherhood programming

Building upon previous efforts to sustain fatherhood programming in the Ambagamuwa Area Development Program (ADP) in Sri Lanka, 70 participants from MenCare fathers’ groups have established an official body to continue MenCare community programming after current MenCare coordinator World Vision concludes its work in the area. MenCare’s media campaigns, adapted around the world, inspire men, their families, and their communities to support men’s caregiving. As part of these campaigns, MenCare partners in more than 10 countries have produced short films that tell powerful stories of men rising above violence, overcoming childhood trauma, and combatting traditional gender norms to become involved fathers

In September, the Center for Men and Masculinities Studies and Equimundo launched the Priyo Baba (“Dear Father”) campaign in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The campaign, whose motto is “Responsible Father, Happy Family, Prosperous Country,” encourages men’s involvement as equitable and non-violent fathers and partners.
